Draw mind maps right in the browser without installing anything. Keyboard shortcuts (Tab for a child, Enter for a sibling, Delete to remove) plus drag and drop let you organize an outline in minutes, with 11 layouts including mind map, logic chart, org chart, fishbone, brace map, tree chart and timeline, plus several color themes. Open existing XMind files, Word documents, Markdown, Mermaid, indented outlines or Excel sheets to keep editing, then export .xmind (opens in XMind), PNG/SVG images, PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel or Markdown. Maps stay in your browser by default, and editing, import, export and download are free for everyone; Qiling VIP members can also save maps to the cloud, pick them up on another computer and share them publicly or with specific collaborators (edit) and viewers (view only).
How to make a mind map online
- Double-click the central topic to rename it; press Tab for a child node, Enter for a sibling, and just type
- Drag nodes to move them under other nodes or reorder; click the dot at a branch end to collapse or expand
- Switch layout and theme in the toolbar; use "Export" to download XMind, PNG, SVG, PDF or Markdown, or "File" to open existing .xmind / .md files
FAQ
Can XMind open the exported .xmind file?
Yes. The file contains both content.json for XMind 2020+ and content.xml for XMind 8; node hierarchy and collapsed state are preserved.
Where is my map saved? Can I see it on another computer?
By default the map is saved in the local storage of the current browser and not uploaded, so other browsers or computers cannot see it. Export it as .xmind or JSON to move or back it up, Qiling VIP members can also save it to the cloud and open its address (/edit/<id>) on another computer.
Can I turn Markdown or an existing text outline into a map?
Yes. Use "File → Import from outline text" and paste Markdown (# headings, - lists) or plain text with indentation for levels; or simply open a .md / .txt file.
Is there collaboration?
Yes, as a Qiling VIP feature. VIP members sign in and use Export → Share / collaborate to save the map to the cloud. Make it public so anyone with the link can view it, or add people by email or username as collaborators (can edit, cannot delete the map) or viewers (view only). Edits sync to everyone, and if two people change it at once you choose which version to keep. Anyone can also copy an offline snapshot link, which gives the recipient a copy.
Does it work on phones?
It opens in mobile browsers with one-finger panning and tap-to-edit, but keyboard shortcuts and dragging nodes work best on a computer.
Do I need to sign up or pay?
Editing, import, export and download are completely free and work without signing in, with no node limit and no watermark on exported images. Only cloud save and sharing need Qiling VIP.
Are XMind boundaries, summaries and task progress supported?
Yes. Right-click a node or use the properties panel to add boundaries, summaries, tags and task progress; they show up in XMind after exporting .xmind and are kept when importing XMind files.
Can I turn an Excel staff list into an org chart?
Yes. If the sheet has "Name" and "Manager" columns ("Title" is optional), open the .xlsx or .csv with "File → Open file" and the org chart is built from the reporting lines, each box showing title and name; without a manager column each column becomes one level. Then add photos for managers or make an assistant sit beside the manager line.
Can I go back to an earlier version?
Besides Ctrl+Z, "File → Version snapshots" saves the current version on demand, and a snapshot is taken automatically before your first edit each day and before an import overwrites the map. Snapshots also stay in your local browser.
Can I turn a Word document into a mind map?
Yes. Open the .docx with "File → Open file": Heading 1, 2 and 3 become branches at matching levels, lists become child nodes and body paragraphs go into node notes. Headings that are only bold or larger text are recognized too, and a Word file exported here comes back with the same structure.
